Recently, sixteen BPN employees took part in the Fit for All 5K/Boofest at Riverside Park on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The Fit for All 5K/Boofest event supported efforts to fight childhood obesity; 100% of the funds raised went directly to Fit for All’s Annual Campaign fund to support childhood obesity prevention.
When brainstorming ideas for BPN’s first philanthropic effort, one of our first thoughts was a run/walk. With the weather about to change, we wanted to take part in a local outdoor event that had a positive impact on the community.
When initially meeting to discuss BPN’s philanthropic calendar of events with Free the Children, we choose three main topics to focus: Education, Environment, and Equality. For the month of October, BPN decided to focus on the social issue of Education, specifically educating children. Childhood obesity is a topic that has been garnering an increasing amount of attention on a national level recently.
This issue hits hardest right here in our own community. Among NYC children age 6-11 years old, 21.3% are obese versus the national percentage of 19.6%. It is important that we are the generation that helps end childhood obesity so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.
In addition to raising funds to support the fight against childhood obesity, this race also gave us the opportunity to lead by example by getting out there and being active. With a very early Saturday wake up call, the BPN employees that took part all arrived with a smile on their face. After everyone received their race numbers and t-shirts, we participated in a Team BPN stretching session to get us ready for the race.
At the end of the race, everyone that was finished was waiting at the finish line cheering for the remaining team members. All in all, the Team BPN Fit for All 5K was a great success. It encouraged BPN employees to be active on a Saturday morning, spend time with co-workers outside of the office, and help raise money for a great cause.
